BalcoDeck® is protected by UK patent GB2636232, granted by the Intellectual Property Office in January 2026.

Development began in 2022. The patent was filed in early 2024 – only after filing could the system be marketed or supplied commercially. The grant in 2026 confirmed the IPO’s finding that the engineering was genuinely new and would not have been obvious to a skilled engineer working from existing knowledge.

The patent covers the specific structural platform geometry that allows a balustrade and deck system to resist wind uplift and lateral loads on a finished waterproof membrane – without drilling through it. Ballasted rooftop plant had been placed on flat roofs for decades. Doing it for a balustrade, which must resist large overturning moments at height, had never been solved before BalcoDeck®.

The full story of what the patent protects, why it took until 2024 to file, and what it means for anyone specifying a roof terrace is live now here.
